Description: Roof rats are distinguishable from mice by their body structure. Unlike mice, rats get as large as 40 cm long, have large ears and eyes, scaly tails and a pointed nose. They are usually covered with black or brown fur, which is smooth.
Biology: With a life expectancy range from 12 – 18 months, roof rats are exponential breeders. Females become sexually mature within two to five months, and are able to breed year-round. She can produce four to six litters per year, each consisting of six to eight young.
Habits: Nocturnal by nature, roof rats are extremely adept climbers, and prefer to remain in higher elevated areas such as trees, attics, eaves and roofs. They are considered to be hoarders, meaning they will stash food supplies, and they abide by a social hierarchy in higher populated colony.
Control: Like mice, rats are potential carriers of serious diseases and should be eradicated as quickly as possible. When a home is already infested, the best method for 100% removal is to contact a professional. To prevent an infestation, block any potential areas of entry such as openings in eaves, roofs, windows or vents.
